All You Need to Know About Diets and Weight Loss
As a physician who every day treats the consequences of our society’s obesity epidemic, I searched for an accurate, authoritative and comprehensive book that my patients could read to help them to lose weight. Instead I found a bewildering plethora of diet books filled with incomplete and often inaccurate information. I therefore resolved to research the subject myself and to write an easily understandable weight loss book that includes all the information I would like my patients to know. The outcome of that research is this book. The intent of this book is to review the current best evidence for the treatment of obesity. In this book, you will not find a new diet plan, but rather a complete review of what we know so far about why we become overweight and how we can lose weight. Think of this as an introductory college course in diet and weight loss. After reading this book you will be better prepared to create your own weight loss plan based upon the best available evidence for what actually works. One-Page Book Overview The book begins by reviewing in some detail how our bodies extract and use energy from the foods we eat. This is basic foundational knowledge that all dieters should understand. The next section will teach you about why people eat when they do. First, by reviewing what controls feelings of hunger and fullness, then by reviewing triggers for eating other than hunger. By understanding why people overeat, you will be able to gain more control over your own eating habits. Next we review likely causes of obesity. This section is important because if we blame the wrong cause, we will work toward the wrong cure. You can then identify your own lifestyle choices that make it hard for you to lose weight. With the preceding sections of the book as foundational knowledge, you will then be ready to review different diet and weight loss therapies, including medications and bariatric surgery. After you complete this section you will no longer be confused by the myriad of weight loss books and advice and will be able to design your own weight loss plan based upon what is proven to work. Finally, the last chapter summarizes the important points of the book and makes suggestions for how to gradually lose weight.
